5 Mistakes To Avoid On Your Resume

Tina Nicolai believes that she has seen more than 40,000 resumes in the time since she founded Resume Writer’s Ink back in 2010. She has seen a lot of irritating errors in resumes. While some of these errors might not seem important, others can be very significant. These errors can make a difference in a highly competitive job market. These are five of the most frustrating mistakes you can make.

1. Carelessness

“The biggest mistake job seekers make is that they are careless, don’t pay attention to details, and they are lazy.” Nicolai claims he has seen too many resumes that have typographical errors, used unprofessional fonts, and included irrelevant or outdated information.

Tip: Combine a text editor and a spell-checker. Spend some time reviewing your resume or asking someone else to.

2. Too long summaries

If you write summaries in a formal tone or include too many adjectives, they can be annoying. Resumes can start to look like a lengthy chapter in a book after a while.

Tip: Try to keep it simple and use phrases like “I have achieved this thing”.

3. Too many buzzwords

Nicolai says that the typical resume jargon includes “innovative,” good teamwork, and “exceptional communicator”. These are all things you can expect to see in all resumes. A person who is truly a “unique problem solver” who works well with others will be able creatively to communicate it in their resume using a combination of pictures and words.

Tip: Give specific examples of your strengths and how they can help you solve problems.

4. Don’t be too formal

He claims that very formal resumes don’t suit his taste because they lack appeal and don’t allow the reader to see the candidate as a person.

Tip: Use accessible language to ensure that recruiters understand exactly what you can do.

5. Use a template

People often use resume templates that are easily accessible online.

Tip: The resume template can be used as a guideline to showcase your personal brand and highlight your most significant accomplishments.
